Sheffield’s Poet Laureate to launch new bookPosted by: Ashley Birch
Otis Mensah releases his first ever collection of poetry this Friday
This Friday 17 May will see Sheffield’s first ever Poet Laureate release his first ever book of poetry, at city-centre venue Café Totem.
The night will launch Otis’s ‘SAFE METAMORPHO’ collection with a headline performance of both work from the book and exclusive new material.
The event will also give attendees the chance to get their hands on a copy of the new book and the chance to catch a glimpse of Jackie Moonbather, a DIY soul artist and member of the Blancmange Lounge music collective.
Otis said: “So excited for my book launch and headline show next month, Friday May 17th at Café Totem, Sheffield. The night will be blessed with a live beat set from the intern and a live performance from Jackie Moonbather! I’ll be sharing words from my new poetry book, as well as some new rap stuff.”
Otis was appointed as Sheffield’s first poet Laureate by the current Lord Mayor Magid Magid in October last year. A new position for Sheffield, the initiative sees Otis take up the two-year honorary role, for which there is no payment and includes a set of commissions, workshops and events throughout his tenure.
Speaking in October, Magid said: Otis represents all that is great about Sheffield, he's dynamic, skilful and radical. And this certainly shows in his work too. Otis will, without a shadow of a doubt, help advance and enhance the already incredible arts and culture of the city.
“The appointment of Mensah is my commitment to champion the amazing talent and diversity of the city’s arts scene.”
