Kelham Island Film Club announces first screeningPosted by: Ashley Birch
The pop-up cinema launches in The Sheffield Brewery Co. on 24 October
Kelham Island Film Club, a new pop-up cinema club in collaboration with The Sheffield Brewery Co., has announced its inaugural screening will be Chris Morris’s British satire Four Lions on 24 October.
Tickets for the event go on sale tomorrow and last month they told VIBE they are hoping to make the screenings as accessible as possible by operating a ‘pay-as-you-feel ticket system’, with the suggested costs of tickets being £2, £4 and £6.
Four Lions will be the first in a series of Yorkshire classics including The Full Monty, Brassed Off and Threads. The screenings will be programmed in short seasons of around six films at a time over the course of a couple of months, and following these initial screenings, organisers intend to take on different themes, genres, national cinema and films by different directors, with each season.
The new film club has been set up by Kelham residents Samuel Summers and Rose Butler, who share a love of film and vast experience in the film industry.
Speaking about why they decided to set up in Kelham Island, Sam told VIBE: “Kelham Island is a relatively new community built on a strong history and echos Sheffield’s proud industrial heritage. We feel proud to live in this area and we are always looking to add cultural activities that would give residents and visitors a chance to meet and socialise over a beer and film.”
“We wanted to find a venue where our audience could spend some time before and after the screening and this great Victorian building was the perfect fit for us.
“It’s tremendously exciting to think we’ll soon be kicking off our first screening with Sheffield Brewery Co., says Sam: “It’s been a long time in the making, and some long evenings planning our first programme, but we’re happy and confident we have a programme that people will love with a mix of films that can really bring a community together.
“We also have people to thank, as without their support this wouldn’t be a possible. Cinema For All have been amazing with their backing and guidance from the word go, and are continuing to support us in so many ways. The Sheffield Brewery Co. is a perfect venue for screening film, they have not only given our film club a platform but also given so much to the local community and we are proud to be working closely with such a passionate group of people.”
