The independent Sheffield cinema is raising funds after vandals set fire to parasols and caused substantial damage to their brand new terrace
Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema is asking residents to help kick-start their fundraising efforts, after a ‘wanton moment of vandalism’ caused £8,000 worth of damage to their newly refurbished outside terrace.
In the early hours of Wednesday 3 July, vandals set fire to parasols, in a mindless attack that also damaged wooden tables, scorched the decking, and left bosses ‘devastated’.
Thankfully no one was injured in the attack, and a crew from Sheffield Central Fire Station were called out to tackle the blaze just before 3am.
Donations have already been rolling in, but The Showroom estimates the repair bill will run to around £8,000, and bosses are now trying to up their fundraising efforts.
Meabh O'Donovan, Marketing and Development Manager, told VIBE: “We are upset that such a wanton moment of vandalism can cause £8,000 worth of damage, but also are thankful that no one was hurt as a result of the fire.
“The people of Sheffield have been great and we have had many donations towards the repair. We will find the rest and have it back to new in no time.”
As well as being an independent cinema, The Showroom is also an educational charity, showing a huge range of culturally diverse films from around the world. They offer accessible screenings for people from all walks of life and their commercial activity helps support the work of the charity.
Over the last couple of years, The Showroom has invested heavily in its bar area, both inside and out, and the terrace had been open for less than a month before this attack.
