Staff from the theatre raised £250 on the charity’s ‘Cupcake Day’

Sheffield Theatres’ staff held their very own Bake Off on Thursday 13 June, in support of the Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day, raising £250 with their sweet creations.

For this event, staff from across the organisation were challenged to present bakes in the categories: Sweet Treats, Savoury Snacks or a Showstopper – the latter being themed to an upcoming or past show at Sheffield Theatres. In addition, customers had the chance to get involved by buying cakes at the Crucible café, where 25% of each bake went to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Claire Murray, Communications & Fundraising Director explained: “We’re passionate about welcoming everyone to our theatres; and that’s why we have a rolling programme of Dementia Friends training for our staff – to enable us to support people living with dementia when they visit.

“We’re also a company that runs on cake, and we had the most fantastic selection of bakes created by our talented team yesterday.

“Supporting Cupcake Day was a great way of us bringing our own values and passion to support another charity that’s making a difference to people’s lives.”

The bake off was judged by a panel of local experts, including former Great British Bake Off contestant Howard Middleton.

Claire Murray added: “We’re very grateful to our judges for giving their time to support our event and to the Light Cinema, Marmadukes Café and Fly DSA Arena who have supported us by providing prizes for our star bakers.”

Sheffield Theatres offers a wide range of dementia friendly activities including dementia friends training for the public and monthly tea dances for those living with dementia and their carers.

Since 2017, over 2900 people have accessed Sheffield Theatres’ Dementia Friendly activities and opportunities, and over 350 people have been made Dementia Friends.
