Naked Ape bring great outdoors to Sheffield city-centrePosted by: Chekere Ullanda Williams
The Sheffield retailers aren’t monkeying around supplying Sheffield with resources for living adventurous and environmentally responsible lifestyles
Naked Ape has been bringing high-quality outdoor products to the heart of Sheffield since 2005, when owner Wayne Biney saw a demand for premium, ethical, high quality outdoor clothing and equipment in Sheffield, due to its close proximity to the Peak District.
They Pinstone Street shop pride themselves on stocking grass roots brands that use recycled and organic materials, and are official UK stocklists for brands such as Patagonia, Carhartt Workwear, Danner boots, Vibram Fivefingers, Teva Sandals, Keen Footwear, North Sea Clothing, Mephisto shoes and more.
The name Naked Ape was inspired ‘by a book of the same name, written by zoologist Desmond Morris in the 1960s’ says Wayne.
Morris coined the term to refer to humans, who have lost most of their body hair and now as a result have to use clothing to protect themselves from the outdoor elements. The shop’s gear reflects this and is suitable for many outdoor activities, including rock climbing, hiking, biking and skiing/snowboarding.
Wayne told Vibe: “Our main aim is to stock high quality products available from the best manufacturers of outdoor and technical gear who make exceptional quality and innovative products.
“We aim to provide the best quality clothing and equipment at great prices so you can enjoy your activities in comfort and safety.”
But that isn’t where their ambitions end, with plans to find an alternative, larger retail space, allowing them to stock a more diverse product range and introduce additional niche brands to their Sheffield customers. Wayne said: “The products is what makes my shop unique, long lasting pieces that are not just throw away fashion.
“Naked Ape is the only stocklist in Sheffield for it, and there’s only four stocklists in the whole of the UK’.
