The owner of one of Sheffield city centre’s most popular bar/grills has brought back its chefs to help feed the needy.

Rick Bailey, owner of FirePit Rocks on West Street, is aiming to provide 12,000 meals for the people most at risk as the present lockdown conditions continue.

He is the only restaurant in the city that has signed up to the ‘Open Kitchens – Feed Your Community Scheme’ and the move has proved so popular it has already provided nearly 1,500 free, highly nutritious meals.

The scheme works by people pledging £1.85 per meal through the venue’s Just Giving page.

Rick Bailey said: “That covers the cost of ingredients and packaging the meal – our staff and chefs are working voluntarily. We make nothing out of it – everything is given to provide high quality, nutritional meals.

“Once the meals are prepared they are handed to our ‘Delivery Angels’ who drop them off around the community following strict health and safety guidelines. I’d encourage any restaurant to join the scheme and help society’s most vulnerable if they’re in a position to do so in these unprecedented times.”

FirePit have pledged to be providing the service for the duration of lockdown and are hoping to provide 1,000 meals per week and an ultimate total of 12,000.
