Viva la VeganuaryPosted by: Annie Williams
Check out VIBE’s (comprehensive!) veganuary round-up…
2019 is here, and as the festive hangovers wear off along with the regret over how much food and alcohol was consumed over the past few weeks, people traditionally use January as a month to ditch last year’s bad habits and replace them with new ones, all in the name of a healthier lifestyle.
In attempt to improve health and well-being for the year ahead, many people opt for the UK's one-month booze-free challenge, Dry January, but this year, making a month-long pledge to Veganuary, the commitment to go vegan for a month, is proving to be just as popular.
Like all New Year resolutions, sticking to veganism can be tricky, but we have provided you with a guide to make things a little bit easier.
First up, here’s a few exclusively vegan Sheffield restaurants and cafes to give a try:
Make No Bones
If anyone knows how to have fun with food it’s the guys at Make No Bones. Their unique menu boasts fantastic burgers, surf and turf made with vegan meat substitute seitan, and for those that have given up on their New Year health kick, there is a range of sweet treats to get your sugar fix. Popular for their friendly atmosphere and unbeatable vegan options, get yourself to Church Temple of Fun to see for yourself.
Sheffield’s newest food hall will be providing a full range of vegan options from a number of its traders this month. Whether you fancy a Shepard’s pie at Pie Eyed or a sweet treat from Ellie Joy who has become famous for her signature froconut desserts, you can find it all under one roof here.
If you need some support on kick-starting your vegan journey or just advice to keep you inspired, why not visit SHED’s health event this weekend The Wellness Weekender 2019. The 2-day event includes insightful talks and even food demonstrations on how to live a vegan lifestyle.
With a new menu just in time for Veganuary, the Sunshine Deli on Penistone Road has got all your vegan fantasies covered. The vegan deli sits just minutes from Hillsborough Park and boasts a menu of ‘Fs'h N Chips, Kebabs, Burgers as well as a delivery service which will bring your ready-made vegan goodness straight to your door seven days a week.
One of Chesterfield Road’s finest is on-hand to bring you all the falafel goodness you can dream of. The middle eastern vegan and veggie joint certainly know what they’re doing with chickpeas, whether it’s a healthy sweet potato and pumpkin soup you’re after or a deep fried tahini, they’ve got your craving covered.
Heartcure Collective’s Vegan Social Centre
Heartcure Collective is the first of its kind in the UK and Europe, converted from and old warehouse to a vegan social centre in the centre of town. Food Vibes Co works to bring a tasty menu to visitors, and has just had a makeover ahead of the new year, now including home-made veggie mac & cheese, jackfruit curry and BBQ burrito.
In collaboration with Veganuary, the centre are showcasing films related to veganism and the truth behind the movement, including a screening of Okja this Thursday, the tale of a young girl who risks everything to prevent a powerful, multinational company from kidnapping her best friend - a fascinating animal named Okja.
Here’s a few independent businesses that offer some fantastic vegan options:
The Steel City’s favourite burger joint has signed up to make your Veganuary as easy as possible by introducing exclusive burgers available only for this month, along with a brand new menu which oozes vegan options. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to try the Falaf-hell with a side of Tofu-fighters!
And even better, if you share their Facebook post you’ll receive 50% off all main attraction burgers this month!
True North Brew Co is working in conjunction with Veganuary across all of its venues to celebrate everything vegan this month. If you thought going vegan was all about eating healthy food, think again! The Common Room on Devonshire Street has used vegan favourite seitan to curate a menu of fried ‘chicken’, burgers, nachos and more for vegan diners who aren’t so keen on the healthy side of veganism. Or try the range of soymilk pancakes at The Forum from raspberry, chocolate and roasted almonds to tempeh bacon and maple syrup, you will be spoilt for choice.
This popular Brooklyn-inspired diner in the heart of Sheffield's Devonshire Quarter gushes vegan options on their quirky menu. Keep your eye open for the launch of their vegan fired chicken this week too!
With two locations sitting close to the city centre there is no excuse to not drop by this VIBE favourite.
Church Street’s Mediterranean offers a tasty seafood lunch and dinner spread, with options that exclude the sea-food! The menu is packed full of Mediterranean influenced classics as well as a dramatic cocktail menu.
Make sure you check out the Facebook page to find out how you can get £10 off your total bar or restaurant bill this month.
This year has also seen an influx of chains jump on the vegan band-wagon with many providing its vegan customers with their own menu:
A popular favourite amongst vegans due to its early commitment to dairy-free mozzarella, Zizzi’s two city centre restaurants have launched a range of seasonal vegan dishes that will open your eyes to the large variety on offer for plant-based followers. The seasonal additions include the Vegan Rustica Quattro No-Maggi and the Vegan Caramelised Biscuit Cheesecake.
All Bar One
All Bar One on Leopold Street has released a dedicated Veganuary menu which is available for a limited amount of time only. Expect colourful dishes and fresh tastes including Chilli Non Carne Tacos, Rainbow Wrap and Raspberry Sorbet and even vegan wines. Enjoy two courses for £10.50 throughout Veganuary.
Make sure to pop in between 2 January and 28 February for the special menu and offers.
To celebrate Veganuary, Las Iguanas has launched a vegan menu this month featuring Coconut Squash Tacos, the Fiesta Ensalada and a chilli made with sweet potato and butternut squash. The chain is running a 241 deal on vegan mains from Sundays to Thursdays throughout January, perfect for those watching their wallet after Christmas. Find Las Iguanas on Fitzwilliam Street.
Already offering a full menu for vegans including vegan pasta, dough balls and sorbets on offer, Pizza Express is a favourite for Italian loving vegans. If you’re keeping an eye on your weight this month, try the Leggera Peperonata, under 600 calories of Penne pasta baked in a sauce of passata, rosemary, chilli flakes, garlic and roasted mixed peppers, finished with rocket and fresh parsley.
Make sure you look out for Pizza Express’ two for £10 deal, running at all Sheffield city centre locations on Wednesdays until 7 February.
