VIBE's May beer picks
Sean Clarke from Beer Central helps us pick out a few tins for this month
Seems like just a few weeks ago we were enjoying the festive fun, turkey and all the trimmings. Silly paper hats, dozing mid-afternoon in front of the telly, surrounded by wrapping paper and Quality Streets...How the hell can it be May? Half the year’s gone! Well, nearly...
Fear not though, as the days seem to fly by at supersonic speed, the new beers fly in even quicker and we’ve got a non-stop pile of fresh new beers each and every day down at Beer Central. We’re based down with dozens of other independent traders at the Moor Market, just inside the main entrance as you walk in off The Moor. Call in, we’re ever so friendly, open six day per week (Mon-Sat 8.30am ‘til 5.30pm) and we have beers for everyone and every occasion. Don’t worry if you’re not a beer drinker, we’re here to help, perhaps help you pick out your favourite beer ever – here’s three to whet your appetite!
Beavertown - Bloody ‘Ell - Blood Orange IPA 330ML Can and 7.2 percent ABV
Back in 2011, Logan Plant’s early homebrews quickly followed with the idea of opening a brewery in Duke’s Brew and Que (their American Barbeque/Brewtap) and early success led to a brand new brewery in 2012. Throw in superstar beers like Neck Oil, Gamma Ray and Smog Rocket and you have a whirlwind first few years for Beavertown that hasn’t really slowed down since. Based in Tottenham Hale (N17), Beavertown also have their own taproom, open every Saturday, and the annual release of Bloody ‘Ell has just timed perfectly for this column. A smack of citrus with hints of warm blood orange aromas brought on by refined malt bill and loads of juicy hops, grab a can from your nearest bottle shop/bar/pub.
Evil Twin – Imperial Doughnut Break – Imperial Porter with Coffee, Almonds, Vanilla and loads of Doughnuts 473ML Can and 11.5 percent ABV
Evil Twin often go big - amazingly big - but they know flavours, and they know how to catch the imagination and how to get tongues gagging for beer! Founded in 2010 by Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø, they kicked off as a cuckoo brewery based in Copenhagen. As things developed Jeppe also based himself in New York and 2018 will bring the opening of their brand new brewery in Brooklyn. Evil Twin has created some of the most remarkable modern craft beers ever released. Famous limited edition brews include Even More Jesus and Molotov Cocktail, and this particular beer is right up there with them. A big Imperial Porter at 11.5 percent, expect a big sweet hit, a doughnut delight!
Brew by Numbers – 01/03 – Cucumber and Juniper Saison 440ML Can and five percent ABV
Owners Tom and Dave met in China on a rock climbing holiday and who would have thought, from an unusual beginning, they would team up in August 2011 to start preparations to open their own brewery based in South East London. In 2012 Brew by Numbers was born and a simple quality based approach has led to a fantastic range of beers, enjoyed initially in London, but now available throughout the UK and beyond. In late 2017 they celebrated their 5th Anniversary by releasing their first ever canned beer, a stunning 42/01 Double Dry Hopped Pale Ale (the best Pale Ale we tasted in 2017) and the cans have continued to flow in 2018. What we have here is a Belgian style Saison beer with Cucumber and Juniper. Could this be the missing link between Gin and Beer? Get yourself a can and find out!
