VIBE’s May 2019 beer picksPosted by: Sean Clarke
Snooker loopy or Beer loopy?... Sean at Beer Central reckons reckon beer wins!
Welcome to May, welcome to Bank Holiday fever! Two in a month, can’t beat it, and both go beautifully with beer! Sheffield’s also going mad for snooker at the moment and our little shop has already welcomed visitors from Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Southampton, Newcastle, Lincoln, London, Liverpool, Bristol and Portsmouth, yes Portsmouth! We made sure they all returned home with plenty of good beer, don’t you worry about that.
In last month’s column I mentioned that we were taking on The Rutland (Chris), Shakespeare’s (Adam was working there at the time) and Abbeydale (Sam) in a beery Sheffield snooker tournament. You’ll be pleased to know that I thrashed all three at Rileys Sheffield, can’t believe none of them want to play again!? Anyway, enough of my black ball gloating, let’s get back to drinking, here’s three local beers to try this month…
Abbeydale Brewery - Forge IPA (440ml Can & 6% ABV)
Launched early May, this latest IPA from Abbeydale celebrates their long standing friendship with Forge Bakehouse on Abbeydale Road. This is a good strength IPA with Amarillo, Citra & Simcoe hops, look out for it all over Sheffield, particularly in both Abbeydale pubs, The Devonshire Cat and The Rising Sun.
Korruptd Brew Ko - Antistatik v3 (330ml Bottle & 5.5% ABV)
Geoff Varley is a long-time friend and customer of ours, based in the hills of Penistone, who runs the monthly Penistone Homebrew Club with a good few beer obsessed friends. At the end of 2018 he got a commercial license to become a brewery, putting him in good company, joining fellow Penistone homebrewers, Whitefaced Brewery and Lazy Turtle Brew Co. His third Saison release in his Antistatik Series is an absolute beauty. A 5.5% honey and lavender Saison. Geoff is a very skilled brewer, his beers have been an instant success, get in now before he becomes famous!
Triple Point Brewery – KOP Lager (440ml Can & 4.1% ABV)
Our tiny shop in Sheffield City Centre has lots of friendly neighbours and two of them are featured in this beer. Sheffield United are just a few yards away across the Bramhall Lane roundabout and the new Triple Point Brewery (Shoreham Street) is no more than a 3 or 4 minutes walk away. What we have here is a real celebration! The Blades have reached the Premier League, and despite us being Barnsley FC through and through, we’re happy to celebrate their recent success. With apologies to all our Wednesday customers, the Premier League has to be celebrated, this easy drinking Sheffield lager does just the trick! Bring on the Champions League! Ha
