VIBE’s July 2019 beer picks
Get the sun-cream out, make sure you have very simple instructions for pitching that tent, don’t forget your passport, and of course, don’t forget the BEERS!
It’s July, it’s holiday season and it’s either time to relax with a book or time to jump in the pool and go crazy!
Most importantly, it’s time to drink beer! Here’s Beer Central’s Sean Clarke to talk you through what you should be drinking at all your favourite summer events…
Hello everyone, welcome to this month’s VIBE Sheffield Beer Column and welcome to July, the start of the holidays.
Most Colleges and Universities have finished now and the Schools have just a few weeks to go, holiday season is well and truly here. We like our little trips here at Beer Central and this month me and Deborah are heading for Northern Spain, to the Basque city of Bilbao, hopefully we’re going to live on seafood and beer for the week!
We talk to dozens of customers every day and we seem to have a travel hungry bunch. We love to hear and see where everyone is off to and we’re always happy to receive a postcard from your hols! With beer in mind we love to research things before we go on a trip, seeking out the little gems that might offer up something tasty.
Whether it be a special local tipple down in Devon or a world class beer in Brooklyn, it’s always worth doing a bit of research before you head off, it’s so easy now with the internet, tools like Ratebeer and Untappd are a perfect way to see what’s hot (or not) in your holiday destination.
If you’re holidaying in the UK (why would you go anywhere else?!), then taking a few beers with you is an easy way to get your first afternoon/night off to a flyer, a few cans down on the beach sounds about right, you know, like that first scene in Jaws!... Here’s three you might fancy, don’t be going for a swim after these, stick to dry land!
Thornbridge – California Sun
West Coast Session IPA 330ML Can & 4.5% ABV
Everybody knows Thornbridge, based just down the road in Bakewell and been at the forefront of the independent UK brewing scene since 2005. California Sun is their holiday beer, no doubt about it. Available in easy to handle cans, super slurp-able at 4.5% and full of juicy hops, backed up with a West Coast bitter kick. It uses Chinook, Centennial, Cascade & Columbus, old school style combined with modern day techniques, we reckon this would go down perfectly on a beach!
Northern Monk & Lucy Ketchin – Lady of the Sunshine
Fruited Sour IPA 440ML Can & 5.7& ABV
Northern Monk are up in Holbeck, Leeds and lead the way for modern day beers and particularly modern day can designs. Their Patrons Project Series celebrates artists, athletes, musicians, even wild campers! Lady of the Sunshine is the 3rd beer released in collaboration with Lucy Ketchin, a Leeds based Illustrator and Textile Artist. This is a Pineapple, Papaya & Mango Sour IPA that will set all your senses racing. Lay back in the sunshine and let it all flow. We reckon this would go down perfectly at a sunny Music Festival!
Shindigger – Summer
Fruity Lager – 440ML Can & 4.8% ABV
Shindigger hail from over the hills in Manchester and have tapped into the modern day beer scene with a series of popular favourites including Mango Unchained & Everything’s Peachy. To celebrate summer this refreshing Lager is blended with Watermelon to give it a true thirst quenching twist. Turn the dial up to 30 degrees, slip into those denim shorts, drink ‘til the sun goes low…. we reckon this would go down perfectly at your next garden BBQ, makes sure them sausages are fully cooked!
All of these beers are featured in the July Edition of Sheffield Hopcast (recording 4th July), listen in if you’d like to hear our thoughts! Download from all your usual podcast providers or visit https://sheffieldhopcast.co.uk/
