VIBE’s August 2019 beer picksPosted by: Sean Clarke
Beer Central’s Sean Clarke is back from his holibobs, and this month he’s taking us through some of the best gluten free beers available on the UK market
Hello everyone We’re back from our trip to Spain and as predicted, we overdosed on seafood and beer, but enjoyed every second of our trip! Bilbao is a superb city and well worth a visit, stick it on your list of places to go, you’ll not be disappointed.
And so we’re now in August. To be honest, I’ve never been a massive fan of month number eight, it should be high summer, but I always find the nights start to draw in during the latter part of the month and of course all of the pubs and restaurants start promoting all of their Christmas Menus and Events! We’re still bathing in lovely sunshine and it doesn’t seem right to start thinking about turkey, crackers or nut roasts! Anyway, I hope you avoid any festive flyers and instead enjoy the latter part of summer, plenty of lazy days in the sunshine to come before autumn sets in.
I thought we’d re-visit Gluten Free beers this month, there are so many on offer at the moment and they have become a fully integrated part of the UK beer scene. Modern techniques mean that there really is no difference in flavour any more, everybody drinks them, everybody enjoys them, there are health benefits, and to some the explosion of GF beers available in the UK has become an important part of living a near normal life whilst coping with having an ongoing and difficult disease.
This morning’s count in the shop revealed a new record for us, with 31 GF beers available and we’re happy and proud to have achieved that. Locally, we have breweries like Abbeydale and Brew Foundation offering up excellent GF beers, but you can add Brass Castle, Magic Rock, Wold Top, First Chop, Kirkstall, BrewYork, Acorn, Thornbridge and Arbor (and plenty more) to an ever growing list of UK breweries offering up an extensive GF range. Here’s three to look out for, these are good beers…
Brass Castle (Malton) – Very Bad Kitty
330ml Can & 9% ABV
For their 666th brew Brass Castle decided to cook up something a little bit naughty! An Imperial Vanilla Porter, a supercharged version of their long time fave, Bad Kitty. VBK is a silky smooth dark porter with sweets hints from the delicious Vanilla. Enjoy it with your favourite GF Chocolate Cake!
Acorn (Barnsley) – IPA
500ml Bottle & 6.3% ABV
This is a punchy, lip smacking, citrusy IPA that uses Idaho 7, Amarillo, Target and Chinook hops to offer up some old skool bitterness. This would go great with a spicy GF curry!
Abbeydale (Sheffield) – Heresy
440ml Can & 4.5% ABV
Abbeydale’s first ever lager, Heresy was recently launched at their Sunfest Beer Festival and has been wowing the crowds ever since. A real nice balance of sweetness from the malt, gentle bitterness from the noble hops, this is a sessionable lager with a clean, crisp dose of tasty refreshment. Would go great with a big pile of Mexican food!
