The ‘World’s Wildest Advent Calendar’ Launches at The Old Shoe in Sheffield for £699

This world-class collection of wild-fermented beverages, features 24 big-name 750ml bottles of natty wines, sour beers and funky ciders displayed in a vintage Hungarian ammunition chest - with proceeds going to charity
SHEFFIELD, South Yorkshire – When THE OLD SHOE opened in Sheffield’s Orchard Square this past July, the self-described “craft beer taproom, modern ciderhouse, and artisan wine bar” set itself apart from the city’s flourishing pub scene by leaning into more “weird and wonderful” beverages – things like natural wines, wild beers, and barrel-aged ciders.
Now, The Old Shoe is bringing a similar spirit to Christmas – launching an unprecedented “World’s Wildest Advent Calendar”.
The massive 24-day box contains 750-mililitre bottles (yes, all 24 bottles are full size!) offering a mix of natty wines, spontaneously-fermented beers, mixed fermentation ciders and – somehow – other surprising selections along the way! (Fruit wine and mead, anyone?!) The entire collection is then packed into a vintage Hungarian wooden ammunition trunk – one of the few boxes sturdy enough to hold this much booze – and adorned with colourful shredded paper made from the bar’s old menus! The entire package is 54 cm by 45 cm x 42 cm and weighs in at over 30 kilos!
Finally, not content with the calendar simply being “wild”, The Old Shoe’s team of beer, cider and wine experts have also chosen products and collaborations from some of the best makers in the world – drawing from a mix of current stock sold at the bar and aged bottles tucked deep in its cellar. (Expect a number of vintage bottles from the past half-decade no longer sold at retail!)
Names represented in the package include acclaimed craft breweries from around the globe like UK’s Deya, America’s Jester King, and Belgium’s Cantillon; top modern cideries like Oliver’s, Little Pomona, and Find & Foster; and renowned wineries ranging from hip English producer Tillingham to the Burgundy darlings at Dugat-Py. (Yes, spoiler alert, the crown jewel of the box is a stunning red Burgundy.)
The total retail value of this box comes in well in excess of £700 (not including the £60 box!) but The Old Shoe is selling one single World’s Wildest Advent Calendar – never to be replicated – for just £699… with 100 percent of the profits being donated to a local charity that will be chosen with the help of the box’s new owner.
“I wanted to create a gift that highlights our bar’s uniquely diverse drink selection but that was, itself, also very unique,” explains co-owner Mike Pomranz, an expert in both beer and cider and a wine enthusiast. “This advent calendar is such an incredible collection of wild-fermented beverages that members of staff were debating buying it as we were putting it together! If it doesn’t sell by the 1st of December, we’ll reveal the contents daily on our Instagram account, @theoldshoebar. Then customers can see what they missed – and come in and buy the bottles individually while supplies last.”

Housed in a former Schuh retail shop, The Old Shoe offers a constantly rotating selection of 20 draft lines and two cask lines of both craft beer and cider alongside an equal number of by-the-glass options: unorthodox wines from natural producers and overlooked regions; artisan ciders; and fruit wines fermented from unexpected ingredients like rhubarb and quince. Additionally, the bar offers a dedicated menu of handcrafted non-alcoholic drinks made by in-house soft drink technician Tom Claxton.
The Old Shoe also has four fridges offering bottles and cans for takeaway alongside “The Shoe Store” retail area selling a curated selection of things such as glassware, clothing, coffee beans, comics, chocolate bars, books, movies, and other oddities.
The World’s Wildest Advent Calendar will be on display at The Old Shoe starting today until it sells or the end of the Christmas season -- whichever comes first. The bar is now open six days a week: Tuesdays, 3pm – 10pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11am – 11pm, Fridays and Saturdays, 11am – 12am, Sundays, 1pm – 8pm.
