Peddler goes greenPosted by: Ashley Birch
Sheffield’s favourite monthly night market is making the switch to entirely re-usable and compostable cups this weekend. Top news!
The lovely folk from Peddler Night Market have already taken steps towards a more sustainable, environmentally-friendly event, but this weekend will see their biggest commitment to a greener Peddler yet, as they implement their plant-powered plan to significantly reduce single-use plastics on site.
For the first time, the team are introducing re-usable and compostable cups at the bar, as well as making sure all the packaging on site, including cups and trader packaging, will now be made entirely from plants, rather than plastic.
This waste will then all go into the same bins, to be turned into compost and distributed to Yorkshire farmers, meaning the vast majority of waste created by delicious consumption at Peddler will now come from plants and be turned back into plants, closing the loop between production and waste and achieving a sustainable cycle.
Peddler's Mhairi Jamieson, who led on this project, said: “To quote Sir David Attenbrough, ‘our oceans are becoming a toxic soup of plastic and industrial waste’. Thanks to David Attenbrough the plastic and waste crisis is finally being shouted from every roof top.

“Our ethos at Peddler has always been one of reducing and recycling waste. We wanted to make sure the move we took to eliminate plastic had longevity and that we could close the loop on our waste cycle. After a couple of years of research and a lot of trial and error we have found a way to turn our waste into something we can give back to the earth. Watch this space; your cocktail ingredients will soon be grown from the cup you drank it from.”
So, when you head to the bar for a refreshing summer tipple this weekend, you’ll be presented with two options; Either order as usual and your drink will be served in a compostable cup, or buy a £2 reusable cup and get 50p off your next drink each time you reuse your cup. Simple.
Basically, have four pints, the cups paid for itself, and you can enjoy that warm and fuzzy feeling associated with the knowledge you’ve done your bit for the planet (and the four pints). Sir David would be proud!
Peddler is a FREE to attend event and the 44th edition takes place on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 July. For more info, head over to their Facebook page.
