The E-sports bar Meltdown will open its doors to the public next month

Last year, we told you about an exciting new E-sports bar coming to Sheffield and we can now reveal that Meltdown, the French E-sports bar chain, will open its first Sheffield venue on 11 May.

Owner Matthew Collison said: “I’m massively excited – I can’t wait! It’s been a three year journey to get here. Maybe a week before it opens I’ll be really excited like the massive man child that I am. At the moment I’m just making sure it’s right for everyone.

“I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and we’ve already had a quite a lot of interest now the sign is up, with people stopping to take photos.”

The venue for the new bar is underneath what used to be the Boardwalk on Snigg Hill, and is now Bass Box nightclub. Speaking back in November 2018 Matthew said: “We’ve been 15 months in the works and we’ve had to do quite a lot of refurbing.

“We’re making it into a futuristic, post-apocalyptic sort of vibe, which can sound a bit pretentious, and if it’s done wrong it will look like a 90s laser quest, but if we do it right it will look good!”

Thankfully, Matthew has done plenty of research and has plenty of experience in the gaming world. He told VIBE: “I had a previous business ten-years-ago, a video game café in Doncaster, and then I ran events. Then I went to Japan and South Korea because I wanted to see how they do it and I wanted to open something big. Then I found Meltdown in France.

“It’s all about the social element. Rather than have rows and rows of machines and charge by the hour, the gaming is free. We’re an ESports bar. It’s a bit like when your local would make the pool table free on a Tuesday night and everyone would put their name down for a turn.”

The news comes just as the National Videogame Arcade and Kommune open their doors in Castle House, just up the road from Meltdown’s new home and we’re told by Matthew wants Meltdown ‘to be an alternative night out for everybody.’

For more details of an opening date keep checking back with VIBE. In them mean time, head over to Meltdown’s Facebook page.
