Magid Magid is demanding that the Government fund its creation as part of his Christmas message
The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Magid Magid, has demanded that the Government fund the creation of a ‘Climate Force’, after a UN report claims that humanity has just 12 years to prevent the worst of climate change.
The outspoken Somali refugee and Green Party councillor, who Sheffield City Council have attempted to reign in through a new ‘code of conduct’, attended full council donning a hard-hat, a pollution mask, and a t-shirt that read ‘Earth, Best Before: 24/12/30’, whilst posting a picture of him in the same outfit in his signature squat on a bin next to a burning Christmas Tree, and a diesel generator.
After referring to the climate change dilemma as our ‘Will Smith in Independence Day moment’, Magid went on to state that the ‘cowardice’ of politicians and the fact that ‘the greatest injustice of climate change is to our young’ means: “We should launch a fully funded 'Climate Force', a 12 year international scheme for young climate leaders with courage to challenge hapless governments and sinister corporations, as fearless advocates of the Earth in the face of those who have stopped caring if it's destroyed”.
Some of his less eccentric demands included the “need to reduce emissions to net zero, ban diesel and fracking, replace fossil fuels with renewable energy and a re-trained and repurposed workforce, reverse deforestation and ecological devastation, and create a fairer and truly green economy”.
