The Parrot Club opens this week
Owners of a brand new Kelham Island cocktail bar have revealed that their long-awaited opening will be this Friday, 29 November.
The bar, in 92 Burton Road, has been created by the founders of Sheffield favourite, O’Hara’s Spiced Rum and will host its grand opening this weekend following pop-ups throughout the summer.
The team that includes Andy O’Hara, Andy Trudgill and John Wickham have been busy transforming the site to create a new permanent bar and blending house, and back in October they let us in on what we can expect from the new addition to the Kelham Island bar scene:
The venue will be called the The Parrot Club and will be open Thursday to Sunday until 2am, with last orders at 1.30am. The name refers to a totally new premium brand of rum the guys have been working on that will also be available in the bar, along with the original O’Hara’s brand, which just so happens to have a parrot on the bottle.
Co-owner Andy Trudgill said: “This is the precursor to our new rum, which hasn’t been released yet, but is going to be fantastic. It’s a different product to O’Hara’s.”
It won’t just be rum on the menu though. The menu will be separated into eight sections, with each one dedicated to a classic cocktail, so, for example, section one might be Daiquiri, section two Pina Colada, section three The Old Cuban, and so on. Each section will have three versions of the drink, one classic version and two experimental variations.
Co-owner John said: “Everyone will have something on the menu they understand, but then if you want something different, there will be some really exciting drinks on there too. We want to stick to the idea of doing a classic drink, but doing it really well. We want it to be accessible and delicious.
“We’ll also be using as many local companies and suppliers as possible, so we’ll hopefully be working with Starmoreboss, which is amazing, because they are the wizards of booze! In doing that we can be the ultimate freehold as we won’t be tied to any one company. Every spirit and every wine we have on our bar will be there because we want it there, and for no other reason.
As well as cocktails, there will also be gins and wines available, but again John and Andy stress that everything will be the very best it can be, whether it be a pink gin or a pinot grigio. And if you’re looking for something to go with the drinks they will also be selling a range of aged cigars, some of which come from John’s own collection.
Drinks aside, to set the atmosphere in the bar, on Thursday, Friday and Sunday the bar will present live music. ‘We want to specialise in modern up-beat swing,” says John: “not like a jazz club, just really lively and really dancy, and it’s fun! We want booze to be fun.”
Through the rest of the week, on the days where the bar isn’t open, they plan to run fun and informative rum schools, as well as special tasting events and private parties.
To match the swing music vibe, they are going for an elegant feel to the decor, with nods to 1920’s art deco. Andy said: “With the decor, it’s going to be the opposite of what you’d expect from Kelham Island, or even a rum bar. It’s not going to be industrial.
“We’re trying to do something a bit more classic.” adds John: “We’re aiming down the route of a little bit of the 1920s art-deco but more than that very classic and elegant. Simple done incredibly well, basically.
“It would be madness to give the people of Sheffield what you would expect from a rum bar, because there are already city-centre bars doing that very well. It’s taking that idea and looking it at from a different angle.”
We’re told they also plan to serve food, but for now they are keeping the menu as a tasty secret.
So, how are they feeling ahead of opening?
“It’s so exciting,” says john: “it’s something Andy and I have spoken about for a long time now and to have free reign to do the bar we want is going to be awesome. It’s somewhere we want to drink at.”
Andy added: “This is the bar I’ve been dreaming of drinking in!”
