An American husband and wife team have set up a new Sheffield-based brewery and tap room

Dann and Martha, a husband and wife team from Boston, USA have been brewing for ten years in the States, and ran a brewing company called Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project.

They have now relocated to Sheffield to open a brand new brewery and tap room in Attercliffe called Saint Mars of the Desert.

Martha said on the brewery’s website: “It has been a dream of Dann’s for over 25 years to own his own brewery, and we looked long and hard for a great location to do it, and fell head over heels in love with Sheffield. So that’s why we’re here.

“We have built a great little brewery, supplied and installed by Sheffield-based Moeschle UK, with a small bottling line. We also have an in-house screen printing shop where Martha is printing all the labels for our beers. We’ll talk more about the brewhouse and equipment in an upcoming post.”

The brewery and tap room will hopefully be open in the next couple of weeks and already has a couple of beers fermenting in the tank.

The beers won’t be labelled in the traditional manner either, as they attempt to break away from traditional beer style names like helles, pils or bitter, in favour of their own unique naming system.

They explain: “As a craft brewery, we are neither traditional nor historic, so it makes no sense to use these names. Saint Mars beers come from our own creative space and are inspired by traditional beer cultures, among other things. We don’t claim they stand in place of beers that are authentically from those times and places – we’re making our own little space.

“But how will you know what you are drinking? Don’t worry, we’ve thought of that. We are taking our own road with this admittedly imperfect, updatable system. We plan on brewing a full range of beers, light and dark, strong and hoppy, barrel aged, with raw materials from around the world. So we’ve come up with our own naming system, and we hope you’ll enjoy testing it out with us.”
