Best Pub Grub, Westside Restaurant Awards 2016: retro menu, keen prices
With five pubs in Barnsley and two in Sheffield, general manager Jack Hallsall knows from experience that when it comes to pub grub, it’s all about providing old favourites at high standards.
Jack said: “We go back to basics. People get a warm welcome every time they come in and its proper, honest food. The plan is to carry on developing The Crown, growing it and making it a part of the community.”
The Crown Inn at Totley has a chequered recent past but at nearly 300 years old, with its low ceiling and log fires, this piece of Sheffield history should be cherished. And now, with a choice of hand-pulled beers in the dog-friendly bar, it is offering a cheerful reminder of everything a good local can and should be.
The Crown is buzzing again and it seems locals can’t get enough of a food menu that is definitely more grub than gastro.
This is retro food heaven, and at keen prices. For example, choose from the pub favourites section which includes dishes like fish and chips, steak pie, gammon and pineapple and bangers and mash, and two meals cost £15.
Steaks come on a hot stone, blue and moving towards rare, so each diner can judge precisely when it is cooked to their liking.
At a glance:
• Old school menu
• Keen prices
