Westbourne named leading school in Sheffield and seventh nationwide by the Sunday Times School Guide 2018
Led by headmaster, Mr John Hicks Westbourne is the only coeducational independent school in Sheffield offering first class education to girls and boys from the age of three to 16. And such is their commitment to focusing on individualised learning - offering every child the opportunity to excel and be the best that they can be - the latest issue of the Sunday Times School Guide has named Westbourne the “top school in Sheffield and seventh nationwide”.
This approach to teaching and learning not only goes to show that Westbourne definitely has the winning formula, but an enviable excellent success rate, and the demand for Westbourne Senior School is likely to increase further following the publication of the school performance tables in January.
Westbourne ranked as the second best school in Sheffield, including other independent schools on the attainment eight score, which shows how well pupils have performed in up to eight qualifications, including English, Maths, three English Baccalaureate qualifications (including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages) and three additional approved qualifications.
Westbourne is keen to share its excellence and every January, offers scholarships to all year six children in the area, for entry into their senior school in the September of the same year. Scholarships with reduced fee places are offered in five categories: academic, music, sport, all-rounder; and drama and performing arts.
“It was encouraging to see so many external applicants applying for these exams and eager to secure a place in Westbourne senior school,” Says Mr Hicks. “The standard of the results were, as we expected from such a talented group, very high, and with current year six pupils and the interest generated from the January scholarship examinations, September’s Year seven form is likely to be oversubscribed.”
While great pride is taken in the academic achievements of its pupils, sporting excellence and creativity in music, theatre and art are always encouraged. And music plays a principally important part of life at Westbourne, with pupils taking part in everything from classical collaborations with world class professionals, to taking over the stage of Sheffield’s iconic Leadmill for special gig nights.
