The team fended off strong competition from previous national champions

The team of Elliott Brown (captain), Lewis Chinchen, Josh Michalowski and Anna Fardon won the northern schools’ Target 2.0 Interest Rate Competition, held at Greenhead College, Huddersfield on Wednesday.

This competition pits the best Economics departments in the north of England against a panel of Bank of England judges and academics. The team fended off strong competition from previous national champions including the Grammar School at Leeds.

The team of outstanding young economists gave a ‘professional, well-researched performance’ in the words of the judges, presenting their view on what interest rate and level of quantitative easing, along with forward guidance, should be set in order to meet the Government’s inflation target of 2.0%.

The judges singled out the team for their especially deep understanding of some very difficult concepts, which were well beyond the A level syllabus.
