The Sheffield branch of the charity Parkinson's UK has adapted their services, to continue to support people during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Sheffield Branch of Parkinson’s UK normally runs several events throughout the year. Boxing training usually takes place at the English Institute of Sports in Attercliffe working on speed, co-ordination and power to help maintain fitness. Sessions at Foxhill focus on maintaining postural strength and flexibility, as well as balance and general fitness.

During lockdown, the usual support services they offer such as their boxing training, in person meetings and other activites, are sadly on hold. Thankfully, the charity has devised ways to stay connect with those in need and continue to support people affected by Parkinson's.

Staying connected

You can contact the Parkinson’s UK Helpline through the website here or call 0808 800 0303. They will put you in touch with the best person to answer your query.

The website has detailed guidance on the coronavirus for people with Parkinson’s, available to read here. They also offer advice on staying connected with loved ones, which you can read here.

For those who like to use social media, the charity hosts different Facebook pages. There is the main charity Facebook page here, as well as a group for people with Parkinson's and their family and friends to ask questions and support one another. Find the support group here.

The local branch have also established a Facebook page for more local information, which you can find here. They welcome help from anyone who likes to keep others connected and share local information.

Staying active

In addition to specific guidance around coronavirus, the website offers general advice to help manage day-to-day life. This information is designed to help people stay active in mind, body and spirit. It includes 30-minute exercise videos that you can use at home. Find their 'Stay Active at Home' videos on their YouTube Channel, offering a variety of exercise classes at varying levels of intensity.

Supporting Parkinson's UK

Like many charities across the UK and the world, Parkinson's UK has been seriously impacted by COVID-19, which has seen major fundraising opportunities cancelled. If you wish to donate to their Emergenct Appeal, to help keep the charity's services and helplines running through this difficult time, click here.

If you live in Sheffield and have not been in touch with the charity, or local branch, but are interested in knowing more, please contact Hon Secretary, Val Heap on 0114 262 0468 or valheap@outlook.com.

I was around 58 when my thumb started giving me problems. As time passed i had other symptoms; hand tremors, restless sleep, muscle weakness, cognitive decline, voice spasm, stiff achy right arm and ankle. At 60 i was diagnose of PARKINSONS DISEASE, i was on Carbidopa and Pramipexole for two years, they helped alot but not for long. As the disease progressed my symptoms worsened, with my neurologist guidance i started on natural alternative PARKINSONS DISEASE treatment from M.H.C. (Mayaka Natural Clinic), the treatment worked very effectively, my severe symptoms simply vanished, i feel better now than I have ever felt and i can feel my strength again. Visit ww w. mayakanaturalclinic. c om My neurologist was very open when looking at alternative medicines and procedures, this alternative parkinson disease treatment is a breakthrough.
