It seems like artists are most definitely in the Christmas spirit this year. After such a difficult festive season in 2020 artists have flooded Cupola with submissions in response to its annual Christmas open call opportunity.

We invited artists to submit work that responded to the title ‘Scion’.

Scion - meaning

a) a detached shoot or twig containing buds from a woody plant

b) guardian

c) a descendant, especially a first generation descendant

In Cupola’s 30th anniversary year, the gallery wishes, for its Christmas show, to celebrate a reawakening or a rebirth, if you like, after such a difficult period. Artists never stop creating and Cupola intends to continue to offer new opportunities and to respond to challenges with new growth and new ideas.

Scion – selected group exhibition across media.

27 November 2021 – 8 January 2022

Opening evening: Friday 26 November 7:30-9:30pm – hospitality provided. All welcome.

Venue: Cupola Gallery 178-178a Middlewood Road Sheffield S6 1TD

Opening Times: Monday-Saturday 10-6pm Sundays (in December) 12-4pm

“We are delighted with the response to our call out and have been excited to see so many submissions from artists new to the gallery from near and far across all media. It is going to be a challenge to bring it all together but the quality and diversity is really exciting.” Karen Sherwood, Director and curator.

Fortunately, as Cupola has four exhibition spaces as well as an award winning sculpture garden the gallery has been able to accept work from more than 80 artists and makers. Once the galleries have been rehung with the new work each space will have its own character allowing a sympathetic showcase of these diverse range of pieces. Abstract and figurative, surreal and magical paintings, prints, photographs and drawings to a ‘granddaughter clock’, a textile ‘Mino-bull-taur’ as well as various wonderful figurative and abstract ceramics, sculpture, glass and jewellery the gallery is full to bursting with unique hand made artworks. Work for sale. Prices from £5-2500.

“We have always been delighted by the diverse creativity of artists and happily showcase everything from accessible gift items through to challenging contemporary artworks. We want to excite and enthrall, confuse, challenge and enliven visitors who step through the door. We are all unique, so come and find something that speaks only to you!” Karen Sherwood, Director.
