One-woman musical about a brave suffragette to be shown at St Johns Church Hall

Following their sell our performances of Damned United and Life and Soul last year, Red Ladder Theatre Company return to Barnsley with an inspiring new production, Wrong ‘Un.

Wrong ‘Un, is a one-woman musical telling the story of a suffragette at the unique venue of St Johns Church Hall.

In February 1918, and after several decades of protest and four years of bloody war Parliament is poised to grant what the suffragettes have demanded and fought for – votes for all women. After years of direct action, arrest, imprisonment and force-feeding, it seems their time has come.

Wrong ‘Un tells of the adventures of Annie Wilde, a northern mill-girl spurred by a rousing mixture of injustice, conviction, self-doubt and fear on her journey from schoolroom to prison cell and beyond.

Using witty speeches, music hall style songs and humour, Annie Wilde talks through her childhood, work at the textile mill, eventual move to London to join the suffragettes and all the events that follow in this powerful performance.

Wrong ‘Un has toured for five years – the longest tour in the history of the Red Ladder Theatre Company. The show has played a wide range of spaces: theatre studios, pubs, village halls, trade union conferences, and even a tent at Shambala Festival, and it is still in demand.

This one-woman show is a musical with no musicians – the performer takes on five different roles and sings all the songs unaccompanied!

“…a sharp and intelligent musical.” The Guardian

“A Galvanising reminder of the power of protest.” The Morning Star

“…warm, likable and subversive… One hundred years on, the suffragette movement is still relevant.” The Stage

Wrong Un is on at St Johns Church Hall, Greenside, Staincross, S75 6GU on Friday 20 April at 7:30pm

Tickets £5. For more information and to book visit the Barnsley Civic website or call the Box Office on 01226 327000.
