Rising star and working-class voice, Sophie Willan brings multi-award winning new show to Barnsley
Winner of Herald Angel Award 2017, BBC New Talent Hot List 2017 and Chortle Newcomer Nominee 2017, Sophie Willan is fresh from a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe and is heading out on tour.
Working class northern lass, Sophie Willan has had a lifetime of being branded by others. In her smash hit new show, this brutally honest breakout star returns to tell us why.
In her last show, On Record, Sophie turned usually tragic subjects into comedy gold as she talked about her childhood in care, what it’s like to be the daughter of a heroin addict and the time she got sacked from Santa’s Grotto. This time, in Branded she looks at northern stereotypes, so of course there will be talk of gravy on chips, Thatcher and of the north/south divide, all with Sophie’s hilarious take on things.
Sophie makes bold work that is raucously funny and completely original. Her work is political to the core, but it doesn’t feel like it. With a razor sharp and totally authentic comic voice, she exudes confidence and charm.
Expect a raucous hour like no other from this unapologetic young powerhouse. As seen on As Yet Untitled (Dave), Up Late With Rylan (Channel 5) and as heard on BBC Radio 4.
“It’s great to have Sophie Willan’s working-class voice in the comedy industry… It’s a terrific hour of personal-meets-political standup, gleefully complicating notions of class, feminism and northern identity.” The Guardian
Sophie Willan is at The Civic on Saturday 2 June at 8pm. Tickets are £12 and £10 concession.
