Barnsley scoops Best Indoor Market title
Barnsley Market has received the national award for the Best Indoor Market in the country.
The award was made by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) at its annual awards ceremony and conference in Birmingham.
The entry from Barnsley Market was recognised for its investment in its temporary markets, partnership working with Barnsley College and the NHS and its Youth Market Programme.
Barnsley Council’s winning entry highlighted the work it has done with traders to encourage them to improve customer service by offering credit and debit card payment options, as well as the recently launched town centre click and collect initiative ShopAppy.com. The market traders have also been offered training and workshops on how to use social media to promote their businesses, including the wider market and all that it has to offer.
Councillor Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place said: “This is fantastic news for Barnsley and a great honour to be recognised as the best indoor market in the country. I am delighted to hear that the judges were impressed by the innovative work our markets team has undertaken. It’s a huge accolade to receive an award like this and have the market traders and the markets team acknowledged for their hard work.
“We have always been extremely proud of our markets in Barnsley, they are the heart of our town centre and people come from all over to visit. It’s an exciting time for the markets; they will be moving in to a refurbished, modernised new home this year, making them even better than before for the traders and their customers.
"Barnsley town centre is changing, it’s undergoing a £130 million transformation, including The Glass Works, a new retail and leisure centre, a state of the art library and community hub, a new public square, a modernised public realm and of course, a new home for our famous markets. This is a great time for Barnsley!
“I’d like to congratulate all of those who have played a part in securing this award and, of course, our valued Barnsley Market traders and customers.”
The award was presented by Celebrity Cake Maker, Molly Robbins from Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers Programme.
