Lewis Platts from Brocco on the Park was crowned Young Chef of the Year at the Westside Restaurant and Bar of the Year Awards 2018, which took place last night at Baldwins Omega.

Lewis has been working as a chef de partie under head chef Leslie Buddington at the hotel restaurant over the last two years, and wowed the judges at a MasterChef-style cook-off at luxurious kitchen showroom, My Fathers Heart, who sponsored the award.

Four talented rising stars battled it out for the title. Lewis was joined by junior chef Jack Goodwin from The Peacock Inn Cutthorpe, sous chef Warren Donahue from The Samuel Fox Country Inn and senior chef de partie Nick Stewart from Losehill House Hotel. Nick also received recognition at the award ceremony for being Young Chef Runner-Up.

Westside’s managing editor Chris Wilson was joined by forme Sheffield Catering College tutor Mick Burke, Great British Bake-Off star Howard Middleton and Westside reader Anne Brand to judge the dishes.

Cooking on the latest state-of-the-art kitchen equipment in the My Fathers Heart showroom, Lewis stole the show with his mouth-watering spring lamb, accompanied by salt-baked jersey royal potatoes, charred feta, asparagus, peas and sweetbreads.

“It’s a little bit of a shock,” said Lewis on receiving his award. “I cooked my lamb in the traditional way. I do a bit of everything at Brocco, though a lot of my work is usually focussed around chocolate, cakes and sugar work.

“I’d like to thanks my head chef Leslie, Tiina the owner, Nick Beedham the manager and everyone – they’ve all given me amazing support.”
